Wall

The wall is exactly as the name suggests... a wall. Your people cannot pass through it, and nor can most the beasts on the ground (of course there are exceptions once you start hitting mid-game play!). However, one cool thing about walls is that when stairs are placed next to them, your villagers and warriors may go on top of the wall. This will prove to be very beneficial for your ranged warriors, getting an extra boost in range by shooting from a higher vantage point. Also, the ground units will not be able to reach your troops above.

Walls are great for keeping the ground troops out, but they do not do much against the flying beasts, and there are a number of flying beasts. While a wall's hit points starts out pretty low and miserable, it gains hitpoints rapidly. It is important that a wall is only as strong as it's weakest link. A beast can tell just by looking at the wall what it should be able to destroy the quickest, and will take the fastest path to get to the other side that they can. Therefore, you should try to keep your walls of roughly equal value. If there are a hundred beasts coming your way, they just might decide going through will be faster than being channelled through a preconceived death trap.
